Appreciating Jewelry

The glitter of jewelry has a magical effect to everyone. The love of jewelry does not have social class or social boundary. Everyone is touched by the power and lure of this seemingly magical artwork. From the pieces of jewelry worn by children, engagement rings, to heirloom jewelery from the parents. Do we really appreciate jewelry as a work of art, or do we just regard jewelry pieces as embellishments? The truth is jewelry as a form of art actually goes unnoticed compared to the art in paintings and sculpture. People will get amazed with a four-carat diamond on an engagement ring or they will notice a diamond bracelet in you hand. People appreciate jewelry in terms of cost, prestige and not on the work and the artistry that goes into the production of the jewelry piece. The attention is more on the weight, size, and prize tag.

The attention on the prize tag and the neglect of the jewelry’s form, design details has taken away the appreciation for jewelry as a true form of art. Jewelry has reduced to nothing but an expensive show of wealth. The divorce from the real and pure meaning of jewelry is due to the materialistic mindset that’s very common nowadays. Jewelry is seen as a status symbol or an investment, thus the cost of the jewelry is given more attention. Until people learn to appreciate and give credit to the artistry behind the design of the jewelry, true appreciation of the art of jewelry making may soon disappear.
